With utilities and interest rates skyrocketing, where to spend your hard-earned cash this Christmas may throw up a few more decisions than usual. Not to mention climate concerns. Making sustainable choices is something that many of us want to do, but finding the correct information can be confusing.
Like everything, the monetary price of real Christmas trees has been steadily rising, with the increase in labour costs, business utilities and fuel, this is sadly inevitable. But must we also consider the environmental cost? Perhaps it is time to switch over to an artificial tree? A one off investment which then sits happily in the loft for the next festive season, without a fallen needle in sight- potentially a more sustainable option? There is certainly an argument.
However, before rushing down to the nearest hardware store, consider the following:
- Real trees are not manufactured in a factory and will be growing in the field for up to 10 years (depending on size). All the while they are absorbing Carbon Dioxide and releasing Oxygen, whilst also providing homes for wildlife. The Carbon Trust reports that a real Christmas tree has a “much lower” carbon footprint than an artificial one, particularly when disposed of thoughtfully. In fact, a two-metre artificial tree has a carbon footprint of around 40kg, more than ten times that of a real tree that’s burned after Christmas.
- Christmas trees are grown specifically as a crop, so cutting them down is not depleting native forests. By choosing a real tree you are supporting a local business and also effectively planting trees which would not be there otherwise.
- When a new tree is harvested, a new one is planted in its place.
- Unlike artificial trees, real trees are 100% recyclable – chipping is a great idea for real trees or utilising a local recycling scheme. Child Bereavement UK are running a Christmas tree recycling scheme this year which needs to be pre-booked here.
- Most artificial trees are made in China, therefore transportation adds to their carbon footprint.
- Potted trees with roots are a great idea if you would like to re-use your tree or move to the garden for an outdoor option.
- It’s estimated you would have to reuse an artificial tree 10 times to negate its impact, on average they are used only 4 times.
Finally, although perhaps said with the bias of Christmas grower, real trees add a smell and presence to your house that an artificial tree just can’t compete with.
Homegrown and British-grown Christmas trees are available at our farm, we are open for trees Tuesday to Saturday 8.30 am-5 pm and Sundays 10 am-4 pm in the run up to Christmas.
