Role: Retail Operations Assistant Manager
Reports to: Retail Operations Manager
Hours: 45 hours per week, Sunday–Thursday. 4 days per week also considered.
Salary: £34,000 FTE
Job Purpose
We are looking for an organised, commercially minded and hands-on Retail Operations Assistant Manager to join our growing Farm Shop team.
Working closely with the Retail Operations Manager, you will play a key role in leading the shop floor team and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the Farm Shop.
Alongside team leadership and customer service, you will support stock control, EPOS management, buying, merchandising and seasonal promotions. This is a varied role for someone who enjoys being at the heart of a busy retail environment and takes pride in keeping both the shop floor and behind-the-scenes operations running brilliantly.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Shop Floor Operations
- Support the Retail Operations Manager in the day-to-day running of the Farm Shop.
- Lead, motivate and support the shop floor team, providing a visible management presence throughout the day.
- Take responsibility for the Farm Shop in the Retail Operations Manager’s absence.
- Maintain excellent standards of customer service, product knowledge, presentation and merchandising.
- Support staff training and development and help coordinate daily team priorities.
- Deal confidently with customer queries and operational issues.
- Support opening, closing and cashing-up procedures.
Stock Control & Store Rooms
- Maintain strong stock control across the Farm Shop, including regular stocktakes and cycle counts.
- Oversee the organisation and management of store rooms and back-of-house stock areas.
- Ensure deliveries are efficiently received, checked, stored and replenished onto the shop floor.
- Monitor stock availability, rotation, wastage, overstock and slow-moving lines.
- Work with the Retail Operations Manager and Buying team to maintain appropriate stock levels.
EPOS, Buying & Reporting
- Support the day-to-day management and accuracy of the EPOS system, including new products, pricing and promotions.
- Work closely with the Buying team to implement new ranges, product changes and launches.
- Run and review regular sales and wastage reports, highlighting trends and areas requiring action.
- Help ensure accurate product and stock information is maintained across the business.
Merchandising & Seasonal Promotions
- Support the planning and delivery of seasonal promotions and key retail trading periods.
- Create and maintain attractive, commercially focused displays.
- Ensure promotions are correctly implemented across EPOS, signage and the shop floor.
- Identify opportunities to increase sales through merchandising, product positioning and seasonal activity.
Standards & Compliance
- Maintain excellent operational standards across the Farm Shop, deli, cheese, produce and back-of-house areas.
- Ensure procedures relating to food safety, health & safety, stock, cash handling and security are followed.

Skills & Experience
- Previous retail supervisory or management experience is essential.
- A confident, positive team leader with excellent customer service skills.
- Highly organised, proactive and comfortable managing multiple priorities.
- Good commercial awareness and an understanding of sales, stock and wastage.
- Confident using EPOS systems and spreadsheets, or able to learn new systems quickly.
- Hands-on, with strong attention to detail and a willingness to take ownership.
- An interest in food, seasonality and high-quality independent retail.
Experience within a farm shop, food hall, independent retailer or premium food environment would be advantageous. Knowledge of deli, cheese, fresh produce or speciality food is desirable but not essential.
Working Pattern & Package
45 hours per week, Sunday–Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the usual days off.
We would also consider 4 days per week, with salary calculated pro rata.
Some flexibility will be required to cover management holidays and key seasonal trading periods.
Salary: £34,000 FTE + discretionary bonus scheme
